Olson woke to the cries of demons.

He stood up in bed, the screeches and wails of the deformed monstrosities ruining the otherwise beautiful sunset. Or was it sunrise?

Olson looked to the phone on his nightstand. Yep, 6:30 PM, the numbers masking the face of some bitch who'd cheated on him but whose hot nude was hard not to look at.

He'd slept the whole day. Not good.

He stood up, still a little drowsy from the painkillers, and stumbled over to the desk. Olson emptied the day’s pills into his hand and swallowed them dry.

The arm still hurt like hell, but there would be time for the pain later. If he was right, now would be just about mealtime. All his men, all twenty-five, would be in one place.

Perfect.

Olson opened the door and headed down the hall toward the quiet mess room, one he shared with only his top men. Even as the door slid open without a hint of flourish, the room fell silent; men sat with spoons frozen halfway to their mouths.

“Listen up,” Olson barked, followed by a clatter of spoons and forks returning to plates. “I'm not sure what the scuttlebutt has been around here while I was out, but I can trust that you are all of sound mind and judgment. If both are true, you are still under my command. Am I mistaken?”

“No, sir!” A unanimous response. Not one missed a beat.

“Good.” Olson strode to the middle of the stage turned lunch line, the repacking of equipment and tables halted along with any munching, slurping, and casual conversation. With a wave of his hand, Olson ordered the men behind him to continue their work.

The stage was cleared within ten seconds.

“Now,” he continued, “I know many of you do not agree with what is going on here, and for the longest time, I have been among you. However, after last night, I am no longer just another ear for your concerns about this place; I am an example. I am what happens when you try and do the right thing here. I am what happens when anyone tries to do the sensible thing and kill these creatures. Do you agree?”

“Sir, yes, sir!” the room responded as one.

“I would not ask any of you to suffer what I have suffered. I would never wish harm of any kind onto any of you. And you know I would not ask you to put yourselves in a situation where you may lose life or limb. You do not serve any nation today; you are independent contractors hired to keep this rock safe from threats, from outside and within.

“But now, we are faced with a dilemma. The threat has made itself clear to us. Clearer than ever. Xmortem is playing with powers they do not understand. Just think about the animals you've seen during your time here. Think about the hell they could bring to the rest of the world, should they reach the mainland. Now, I don't know about you all,
